Education and Technology
How is technology
affecting education?
Our group is focusing on the effects of technology on
modern day education. James is writing on how smart phones in class effect the
education of a student. Sam will be writing on how technology has enabled
cyberbullying among students and the impact it has on their education. And
Michele will be reporting on how digital reading is replacing physical printed
books and the effects that this has on the learning process.
I find this umbrella topic to be pretty interesting. Reason being is because most of the upper ranks in education strongly believe that technology negatively effects students because it opens up opportunities for procrastination and distraction. So I'm interested in the effect of a student using smart phones.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an interesting topic, I'm interesting in how this ends up. Technology has definitely had a huge impact on education. I think that creating a survey could help with this. I also think asking teachers who were teaching before all of this technology was integrated into education could be beneficial.
ReplyDeleteThis topic should be interesting because it isnt a very popular or noticed subject and I would like to know the statistics behind the claim that the smart phones have negative impact in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic because eventually everything will be done using modern day technology and electronic devices, it is inevitable. When there are so many advancements in cell phones, computers and smart boards, etc, how can schools expect students to put their phones away, when a phone is more useful and quicker than picking up a book or dictionary

ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent topic because technology has influenced nearly every facet of our modern society and everyone has an opinion on it, be it good or bad. It has been integrated into everything from dining experiences to healthcare. We as students get annoyed with the no cell phone and technology rule that is implemented in our building, however I think it has solved many problems. I see a change in classroom culture, there are less interruptions in class and there is more focus on what is going on. Also, it helps remedy part of the phenomena that is cyberbullying. I am not embarrassed to admit that for a time I was personally victimized by a handful of my peers via the app SnapChat. The use of phones and technology in class directly contributed to that mistreatment. However, it is not to say that there are still not issues in classrooms and that bullying has ceased but it has made it a lot less common and much more difficult.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great topic, and I look forward to reading your editorial! I'm curious to see what exactly James means by "how smart phones in class effect the education of a student". What angle is that coming from, is he referring to the negative impact, or a potential positive impact?

ReplyDeleteI like the multiple approaches, particularly looking at the increase of digital reading replacing phyiscal reading. What this could mean for the future of schools and how education resources will be allocated is something that is interesting to look into.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great topic! I am curious to see Michele's sub topic. Technology is constantly changing and this could also change the way schools are handled in the future. I would like to read this editorial and see what information is collected to support each claim.
ReplyDeleteI admire the multiple angles your the group is taking. It can help the Journalism class learn more about the negative aspects of technology because as young adults we grew up with the constant aide of technology. It is great to introduce more of the aspects we do not think about, such as the bad effects of technology socially and educationally. It is interesting to think about what technology has done to cause negative effects in education. I am intrigued to find out. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI like this topic a lot. As western countries and societies continue their shift towards modern technologies, the role that technology plays/should play in the classroom environment is something that will need to be addressed in the near future. Especially in SOTA, many students feel like their cell phones can be very useful tools which are being restricted due to the inappropriate use by a small minority. I am interested to see what you all find and write, as I think that an editorial on this topic written by students could be a useful tool for the future. I suggest that you gather information and data from school administrators as well, as understanding their current opinions and reasons behind policies is an important aspect of this discussion.

ReplyDeleteI like this topic because it seems as if all of the upper ranking educational administrators believe that technology negatively effects a students ability to learn. I am interested to see how this topic is written knowing that students believe that technology could be helpful in some instances music while working could help someone to focus more. I am interested in reading Michele's subtopic about how technology is replacing books and the effects that could have on learning.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very relevant and topical subject to write about considering the fact that technology is exponentially influencing and interacting with us on a daily basis. All three of these topics are controversial inside and out of the classroom. This begs the question 'is technology overbearing or educational process?' which is disputable in either direction. This editorial will help shed light on the writers perspectives on the topic. This is topical because many students in our school have very strong opinions about this topic and if given the time to read and understand perhaps a different, developed and well thought out editorial could change or strength their opinion.
ReplyDeleteI like this subject because technology is a huge part of life and it continues to grow and everyone says how technology is bad and is taking over but it can also be used for good. There are some things that should be done the same just in case technology isn't available and students can get distracted.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool idea. I am surprised that none of you decided to do write anything about how it has positively effected students. 2/3 are negative and the other 1 is nuetral
