Editorial Proposal: Socioeconomic Standing and Academic Opportunity

Our group has decided to write an editorial discussing the correlation between socioeconomic standings and academic opportunities. Jacob will write his editorial specifically on class offerings within districts around the Greater Rochester area.  Shaquasia will write her editorial on the value of arts in education. Tazmara will write her editorial on student funding. Weston will write his editorial focusing on pre-elementary education.

  1. This sounds really interesting as it has been highly relevant to how we look back on our education after we've graduated. Your personal experience should prove useful here and you may want to try talking to some older teachers at the school about some of the changes that have taken place over the last decade or so. They could have some interesting stories to tell about our diverse school. Though it would be more difficult, parents might also be a good resource, especially for info on pre-elimentary education.

  2. I'm really excited to read the editorials on this topic. The angles are extremely interesting and I like that they are specific. They focus on issues that we deal with in our school life and our opportunities. I think that socioeconomic standings and academic opportunities are, in general, directly correlated with one another. I'd love to see the differences between some of our more funded schools and some of those that are much less funded, and how it relates back to the socioeconomic backgrounds of the majority of the students that attend the schools.

  4. I can't wait to read your editorial, it sounds like it has the potential to be extremely engaging and insightful. Personally I am most intrigued by Jacob's editorial, but I think they will all be interesting. I'm curious as to what aspect of pre-elementary education Weston will focus on, will it be the effects of it, or potential problems with current programs. Also, I'm assuming she was planning on this, but Shaquasia's topic definitely lends itself well to quotes and information from SOTA students. I look forward to reading this article.

  5. I feel like this topic has a ton of potential. This is a issue that many people in our community are interested in and will read. This is a hot topic but also an ignored one, I think this article could shed a light on the situation. There is a article from The Atlantic by Ta-Nehisi Coates about the same thing that you can here: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/
I believe it will be every useful.
