Editorial Proposal: School Dress Codes

School Dress Codes:
Spencer: Unfair assumptions on male students
Jaymee: Comparison to other dress codes/specific details/usefulness of dress codes
Alyssa: Dehumanization of girls
Starr: Unfair enforcement, double standards based on gender.

Our editorial will focus on school dress codes, specifically comparing the RCSD dress code to those of other, neighboring districts. Particularly, each group member will focus on a different aspect of those dress codes. Spencer will focus on the unrealistic image of male students created in the RCSD dress code, Alyssa will discuss the dehumanization of females, and the imposition of sexist gender stereotypes on girls, Starr will talk about the unfair enforcement of most dress codes, and the double standards that are common. On the other hand, Jaymee will look at dress codes in a more positive light, and evaluate how and why they can be useful or necessary.

  1. I like that you're taking on a controversial issue in our school and many schools across the country. I also like the positive look on dress codes as an alternative opinion. I don't quite understand what you mean by unrealistic image of male students it wasn't really clear to me. Maybe you can compare our dress code to that of another school and recognize the differences.

  2. I think it is smart t show your topic from both a positive and negative light. I also think that it is smart that you are targeting some very common issues between student and administration. I think shedding more light on this topic could help to show how it is important that students and staff really have time to discuss things like this together. Allowing for a more open version of the topic to allow new compromises or other possibilities.

  3. It seems like you all have a general idea of what you each want to talk about. It would definitely appeal to everyone in high school and the people who cant really express themselves due to the dress code given. The thing that questions me with the proposal is how could other people who are not in school relate? One could also bring up the idea of how some teachers follow or don't enforce the dress code themselves.

  4. I think this is a great topic because its something that we discuss a lot in school. I think its interesting that you guys are gonna focus on different angles so we can get a different opinion on different issues. These four angles will discuss the many issues with the dress code in the RCSD. Its cool that we also will hear someones opinion on how dress code can be positive.

  6. This is a really interesting topic that has a lot of potential to branch off into a lot of different topics and discussion. The individual editorial angles are different from each other and creates a larger platform for different point of views, and more information.

  7. I like that you are looking at this issue in both positive and negative lights, since the issue is controversial and deserves an insightful discussion. Obviously talk to both students and administrators who have dealt with dress code issues. Also look for any media attention given to students and schools dealing with this same problem. I distinctly remember an instance in which school photos were fixed with photo shop to make the girls show less skin.

  12. this is a good topic because the dress code is such a strict policy and and enforced by many schools. what makes the policy even harder is that is more strict for the girls because we get told to go home or change because the boys cant help themselves. also not every school apply's the dress code they get to dress freely i like how you explain the positives and negatives to the dress code. i cant wait to read the full article.

  14. I love this idea of you guys addressing the school dress code especially in the city school district. As many of us already know we have many complications of how we want to present ourselves. It is very unfair in most cases how they compare the students specifically male and female on there clothing.

  17. It is an interesting topic, one that is often brought up informally with speculations instead of facts. I like the fact that you are presenting both sides of the topic, it isn't often that the good points of the dress codes are talked about by students. I am interested to see where this goes. I'd suggest asking both students and teachers/officials to better understand their grievances.

  19. I like this topic, a, lot. I very much, very much enjoy the argument of the dress code because I know for sure that one side is wrong, that being the side that I,m not on, because, I,m never wrong, ever. Don,t forget the argument about how men don,t get to have the excuse about how they were provoked by how females dress because they should have self control. pip pip cheerio.

  20. Your group should not only address school dress codes, but also address if school uniforms are a good alternative to end all the controversy over what is allowed and what isn't allowed to be worn. As I have witnessed it really only appears to be administrators who complain about what a student is wearing, teachers almost never say anything about what students wear and other students usually don't feel uncomfortable by what someone else wears. The dress code is enforced because inappropriate clothing disrupts the learning process??? Are there any surveys or studies with facts that provide proof of that statement?

  21. This is a really good topic to approach. When you begin researching, its very important that you gather points of view from both the sides of the administrators and the students. Your opinion or ideas might change the further you delve into a topic that's so controversial, so its a good idea to have a good amount of information and sources covering both perspectives. It would also be a good idea to compare the dress code between male and female restrictions. Other than that, this is a very good idea, and it'd be nice to hear more from teenagers on the issue. 23. I can't wait to read your editorials on this topic. I myself did a survey and poll on this for AP Gov, and am interested in this topic. If you'd like to use any of this data let me know and I'll send it over, as I think it would be helpful. I think that these editorials could provide crucial insight into the debate over dress codes, especially at SOTA. You should make sure you include quotes or data explaining why they are the way they are currently, because in order to hope to inspire change you must first understand why things are the way they are to start with. I'm glad someone has chosen this topic and I'm excited to see what you guys find.

  24. This is a very controversial topic and I feel strongly about the topic, not because I'm effected by the dress code but it just makes me mad how a lot of the girls are treated like their clothing is too inappropriate even though its not distracting and there is actually nothing wrong with ripped jeans and shorts and tank tops.

  25. This a very relevant topic. Especially because spring is right around the corner and it's back to the sexist rules of the way girls dress when it's warm. I talk about this all the time because it's unfair and ridiculous. I can't wait to see you guys editorials.
